Lupines

Lupines have formed the backbone of the Sascrian military for generations (even more generations as the Wolfmen reckon).  They serve as the mobile, brutal shock troops of Sascria, and are feared abroad as much as they are honored at home.

Personality

Lupines are fiercely self-confident, particularly when they are part of the Sascrian military, in which they serve as elite shock troops.  Posturing and status are very important to every Lupine - they will always seek to determine exactly where they fall in a hierarchy, and will test superiors to make sure they are deserving.

Physical Description

Lupines are large and muscular, slightly hunched, and covered with layered fur ranging in color from light grey to nearly black.  Their undercoat is white, and they shed relentlessly in warm weather.  Lupine eyes are piercing in color and shine golden in the dark when they catch a bit of light.

Relations

Because of their reputation, outside of Sascria Lupines are often mistrusted and relegated to manual labor or mercenary work.  They fall into jobs like bodyguard and bouncer when they have a less adventuresome spirit.

Alignment and Religion

Lupines tend toward Neutrality.  Their own nature is a balance between fierce self-reliance and pack mentality.  They tend to ferociously defend their allies and also hunt their foes without mercy.

Adventurers

Within Sascria, Lupines are almost universally Fighters and Rangers, often serving in the Sascrian military or sometimes discharged from it and working as adventurers-for-hire.  Outside Sascria, it is rare that Lupines go to school or are fully integrated into society, and they are more often Barbarians.  Lupines respect and fear magic, and think of it as something that other people do.  There are some, however, who delve into their animal nature and find they have a talent for the ways of the Druid.

Names

Lupines often dispense entirely with personal names and go by their epithet instead.  Skull-breaker, Scar, Ghost-runner, Shatterbone and so on serve to both identify Lupines and to spread their reputation, whatever it might be.  Amongst themselves, they maintain hierarchy with those in authority often coming up with insulting nicknames for those under their command, or simply beneath them in social rank.

Lupine Racial Traits

Medium-sized

[4pts] +2 Dexterity, +2 Constitution, -2 Intelligence.  Lupines were bread for endurance and skill rather for deep, rational thought.  Sascrian Lupines who tend toward the scholarly life are often simply beaten down by their peers and made to serve in the military anyway.

Brutality: because of their widespread reputation as merciless shock troops, Lupines receive a +2 racial bonus to Intimidation and a -2 racial penalty to both Bluff and Diplomacy

Fangs: Lupines receive a bite attack, made at -5 and dealing 1d4 damage

Pack Mentality: When a Lupine is flanking a target, he gets a +1 to his Combat Maneuver Bonus against that target.  When two or more Lupines are flanking their opponent, this bonus increases to +2.  Lupines do  not question orders from superiors they fear and respect, and as a result of this tendency to obey are at a -2 to save against [Mind-Affecting] spells, regardless of school

Taste for Blood: Because they eat only meat, Lupines' meals and cost of living are twice what they would normally be.  The extra cost is ameliorated somewhat by the fact that the meat does not need to be cooked.

Winter-bred: Lupines have damage reduction 5 against cold

Languages

Lupines automatically speak Common as well as the dialect where they received their training - most often, that means Sascrian.

Medium-sized

+2 Dexterity, +2 Constitution, -2 Intelligence

[1pt] Bestial Nature: Though they do not speak dog, Lupines can communicate at will with wolves because of their animalistic background.

[-1pt] Brutality: because of their widespread reputation as merciless shock troops, Lupines receive a +2 racial bonus to Intimidation and a -2 racial penalty to both Bluff and Diplomacy

[2pts] Fangs: Lupines receive a bite attack, made at -5 and dealing 1d4 damage

[4pts] Loping Stride: Lupines' base movement rate is 35 feet (25 with medium armor, 20 with heavy)

[total ~ 0pts] Pack Mentality: When a Lupine is flanking a target, he gets a +1 to his Combat Maneuver Bonus against that target.  When two or more Lupines are flanking their opponent, this bonus increases to +2.  Lupines do  not question orders from superiors they fear and respect, and as a result of this tendency to obey are at a -2 to save against [Mind-Affecting] spells, regardless of school

[0pts] Taste for Blood: Because they eat only meat, Lupines' meals and cost of living are twice what they would normally be.  The extra cost is ameliorated somewhat by the fact that the meat does not need to be cooked.

[~4pts] Howl of Winter: Lupines can attempt to demoralize multiple opponents as a standard action.  This skill use becomes more powerful the more Lupines are present and taking part in the Howl.  Once per day, a Lupine can Howl, and the How allows her to make an Intimidate check attempting to demoralize every opponent within earshot.  If the attempt fails, all targets who are not demoralized are immune to future attempts for 24 hours and possibly longer at the DM's discretion.

4-24: +1
25-99: +2
100-400: +3
401-1600: +4
1601-6400: +5
each x4: additional +1

Dropped Loping to pay for bonuses

PF race design system charges more for having two bonuses in the same category (two from the first three physical or two from the second three mental). So the bonuses to both Dex and Con cost an extra 4 'points'

Howl!

I like the idea of the howl (though pack tactics sounds fun too, maybe 'wild' lupine have howl and 'civilized' ones get pack tactics?).

Make the base save 10 + 1/4th character level + Charisma modifier? That gives it a limited ability to scale up by level. Maybe have the howl make those who fail their save by 10 or more frightened rather than just shaken? If they make the save, they are immune to howls for 24-hours, if they fail, -2 to saves against fear until the end of the conflict/encounter/battle?

What about having the 'pack bonus' to the howl's save DC scale up like this?

4-24: +1
25-99: +2
100-400: +3
401-1600: +4
1601-6400: +5
each x4: additional +1

That makes armies lead by a charismatic lupin kind of scary.

The new scale looks fine, and

The new scale looks fine, and maybe 1/4 level will work. I used shaken because frightened seemed too powerful for a racial ability that affects everyone in earshot. (Shaken is like frightened but doesn't force you to flee)

And yeah, I picture a horde of charging Lupines that howl a round or two before they crash into the front lines.

The 24 hours of immunity is a good idea to add.

Added a Howl

I don't know how I missed it, but clearly the Lupines need a Howl racial ability. It is very hard, though, to come up with one that is both significant and also doesn't overpower them. Replaced their elemental resistance with the Howl, since that was the part I was least sold on anyway. Suggestions of how to weak the Howl are welcome - it is intentionally a lower DC than most spell-like abilities (no 1/2 level added to DC) and allows for more Lupines Howling at once having a more powerful effect. The main downside is that this racial ability won't be useful at high level at all - but that's true of a lot of other racial abilities, so for now I'm ok with it.

Racial Feats

Remember that you can always add feats that are available to races for abilities that you think they should have but perhaps go too far in terms of balance.

I could see some pack tactics type feats with lupines.

Starting to be my standard question

Medium sized, yes?

The resistance to cold 5 seems a bit high for basic fur, I would lower it or turn it into a save bonus against cold-based effects.

If they have a reputation as 'shock troops', I would give them a +2 bonus to Intimidation and -2 to Bluff and Diplomacy checks.

Should not the 'Pack Mentality' come with a downside, perhaps a -2 penalty to resist Intimidation, fear or charm from someone with higher status or level?

I thought about it and read

I thought about it and read through the SRD to refresh my memory, and I changed it to a penalty to [Mind-Affecting] spells. This made sense because spells like Charm Person, Command and Fear fall into that category, and also in thinking that Sascria would want powerful-but-malleable servants. They'd hardly want their brutal, carnivorous shock-troops to also be strong-willed enough to revolt en-mass and perform a coup or something.

You have good ideas and good

You have good ideas and good questions, thank you.

I like the Intimidation bonus and Bluff/Diplomacy penalty.

For cold resistance - I'm more apt to reduce it to 2 or so. My thinking is that a save bonus increases the chance that you take half or no damage, which is actually more powerful in many cases than a small level of resistance.

What I have in mind by comparison is the Aasimar, who has 3 resistances at 5, a spell-like ability and an extra stat bonus - but this is balanced out at LA+1. I might keep it at 5 and see what people think if there are more comments. I like the image of winter falling, and that's a time when most wars take a break, but you know that Sascria still has these terrifying shock troops they can send howling to your gates.

Maybe if the resistance does drop to 2 there can be a Lupine-specific Feat like "Winterborn" that increases your resistance to 5 and lets you ignore wintry difficult terrain like snow and ice...
