Theme

“The divide has been damaged, those… things are loose. Save yourselves!” –Faust. This warning was found painted in blood over the scene of the London Massacre in which over 35 people were killed, their remains partially devoured. The police said it was a serial killer, but you know the truth, nothing human could have left those marks in solid bones, it was something….else. Welcome to Fairy Tale, the Horror RPG in which the creatures from your darkest nightmares are real.

Background

It all began over 1800 years ago. Things were very different back then than they are now. All those things you read in those storybooks of yours, those things your parents assured you were not real, they existed. Witches stole children away to feed their sisters. Vampires and werewolves hunted and fed upon humans. Ravenous undead and ghosts of angry spirits took their wrath out on the living. Kami tricksters hounded travelers and led the to their deaths. All in all, it was a rather unpleasant place to live. Then Faust came. No one knows how he came to learn the secret art of the magic, a secret its practitioners would die to keep, or even where he had come from. Most don’t even know he existed. All that mattered was one night a deafening roar echoed across the land, and when it ended, all those creatures that had terrorized humans were gone. Always fearful that they might someday return, the people of that time told stories to warn their children of the danger. Still, with the confidence of youth, the children did not head their parents’ warnings and the stories became nothing more than bedtime stories for weeping babes. It is with confidence that I say that no one ever knew what really happened that day, the day the monsters became myth. How could they even begin to grasp at what was happening around them as Faust gathered powerful magics around him and created the divide? The divide that has kept all those creatures of the night trapped in their own shadow world, separate from ours. It truly was a masterful spell, the like of which this world will never see again. But it did something else that Faust did not expect. When it took those creatures and sealed them away on the other side of the divide, it took all the magic of the world with it. For centuries Faust tried to bring magic back into our world. When at last he gave it up as hopeless he noticed that the world had changed and past him by. Terrified of the strange new creations mankind had made, Faust sought someone who could re-introduce him to the world. He found Able. Able was a very intelligent boy who had always aspired to greatness, but had always suffered from a rash and naïve personality. So as you can imagine, when a strange man came and offered to teach him real magic in exchange for teaching him about the world, Able leapt at the opportunity. That would have been the end of the story if not for one tragic flaw Able possessed; he was in love. The girl of his affections reciprocated his feelings, and they planned to wed even though Faust warned them it would end badly. The night before the wedding, Able’s love died in a car wreck. Grief-ridden, Able buried himself in Faust’s old tomes. Faust foolishly decided it was better let the boy mourn alone and failed to keep a close eye on him. As it was, Able was not morning, he was looking for a way to ‘fix’ death, and soon he found it. He was going to break the divide so her soul could come back. Fortunately, Faust realized what was happening in time to prevent the ritual from being completed, but not before it had done incredible damage to the divide, leaving a scattering of holes in it all across the world. Faust began his preparations to fix the divide, but before he could a monstrous creature leapt out from the shadows and ripped out his throat. Police rushed to the scene in time to catch the monster and were also slain by it. Faust’s neighbors heard a roar that night and a shout of, “Freedom! By Azarath, we shall feast on Man flesh!” and the night was silent. With the last of his strength, Faust wrote a warning to the rest of humanity in his own blood, “The divide has been damaged, those… things are loose. Save yourselves!”, but it was unfortunately disregarded as the ravings of a madman.

Since then, strange disappearances, thefts, and murders have been happening all across the land. Those creatures from your storybooks, those things that ‘are just fairy tales’ are coming back. Fortunately for humanity, so is the magic, albeit slowly. The question is, will it be enough?

Antagonists & Conflict

The Others: The biggest antagonists in this setting are the creatures from the other side of the divide, or the Others. Amongst these Others, there are various classifications such as undead, fae, were-, and others, but they all share one common feature; they like to mess with humans. It might be as harmless as making a traveler get lost in a woods or be as lethal as the London Massacre. Why do they do it though? That is a question with a million answers. For some it is just that humans feed them, be it through flesh, blood, or through human suffering. Others, such as ghosts, are envious of the living and take their anger out on them. There are of course some creatures that are neutral to humanity or even some that might occasionally help humans, but these are from the norm. Everything from those old fairy tales are here, but much darker than the stories made them out to be. In addition, there are others…. Ones humanity has refused to remember.

Humans: Like regular life, we still have to deal with humans everyday. It might be a police officer pulling you over, a thief stealing all your money, or a stingy constable who won’t you look at the crime scene, the point is that they are somehow thwarting your plans. Something to remember is except for a few ‘crazies’, humans do not believe in the Others and refuse to accept that they do exist.

Special Features

Magic: Magic can play a number of different roles in this setting from non-existent to all –encompassing. What I mean by this is that there is very little magical energy in the human world at this point, so only the simplest spells are possible, and even then they can be quite taxing to perform. However, on the other side of the divide, magical energy is present in great abundance, allowing for the easy casting of simple spells, and the ability to cast much greater spells. That is of course, if you know how to cast spells. Even back when magic was common in the human world, both the spells and skill needed to use them were jealously guarded secrets. With the creation of the divide most of those spells have been lost or distorted in some way as to not work anymore. Unfortunately for humans, the creatures on the other side of the divide did not suffer from this dark age of magic. They still retain all the knowledge of how to use magic (those that would know how to use magic that is) and are quite willing to demonstrate their knowledge, though admittedly they do have a hard time using it in the human world.

Deities: Have you ever heard that line, “you’re god can’t save you know”? Well that is an apt description of deities in this setting. Regardless of your religion, it is not going to protect you from the creatures when they come for you. Indeed, some of them find the idea of religion insulting, while others will pretend to be gods or demons. That being said, that doesn’t stop people from believing in gods, and it was the various churches that did wage the most successful campaign against these creatures in the past, so there may actually be something to this whole religion thing….

Technology: It is modern-day tech, whatever you’d see on the street outside, you’d see on a street in the game.

PC Role

The players can come from a number of backgrounds but are connected by one single thing. They are all drawn to the mystery of the strange murders, thefts, and disappearances that are leaving police baffled. They might be a police officer who noticed that a murder victim was killed in a way no human could; they could be a child who saw her whole family killed; or they could be a regular person who saw something weird in the night. The point being that the role of the players, weather their character believes in the existence of the Others or not, is to investigate what has been happening in the world (weather that be a local, global, or other-worldly focus). The rest is up to the GM.

I like it. An original idea (at least for me), using Faust as the cornerstone of magical division. And I do enjoy the idea of something like this without necessarily the incredibly dark Lovecraftian overtones. This reminds me of Supernatural, and that's a good thing I think!

Very original concept. These things existed, but they don't anymore because some guy did some Epic stuff and sealed them away, only he then trusted someone who turned and tried to undo his work for love. Nice. Never explains what happened to Able either, and I like that dangling hook.

Very inspiring also. You could be anyone, and you could be into anything. All you need is the intentions to stop something evil or figure out what is causing all the weird happenings, etc. The fact that it is occurring in the here and now does limit the options a little, but not significantly. And the chance for humor in character gen is high (last gay man cut from the Queer Eye foursome before they went to filming teams up with Daisy Lou, the southern belle from Danger, Arkansas... etc.)

Very good presentation of the concept.

So... this is basically a horror game where creatures from all mysteries, legends and fairy tales around come back to earth?

This is not a bad setting idea, but it is not a terribly new one.

And with the long and elaborated introduction, it is fun to read, but it feels as if it is better suited for a novel than for an RPG.

This looks like fun. I would suggest to make this a global event and check out many myths and legends around th world and put them all in the fitting regions.

The writing is a bit weird: There is a very detailed background and history. but only very few details on how the setting looks like. This gives the setting the feeling that it would fit better to a novel than to a roleplaying game, but the story is well-written and interesting enough.

I would like to know more about what it is that these Others actually want from humans.  That is, they 'mess with humans', but why?  What do they get out of it?  Also, would there be a main focus in this setting?  I get the sense that investigation is more what you have in mind, rather than, say, monster-hunters running around blasting away.  Just curious to see more of what your vision for this setting is.  I do like the idea of the trouble coming from someone trying to 'solve' death (very folkloric/mythic reason for bad to happen - defy the natural order), and it would be interesting if the attempt was actually successful, but at a great cost.  So maybe the 'immortals' who cheat death become monsters.  Something like that.

This setting inspires me.  I can imagine a story involving a bridge troll and a detective trying to sort out strange dissapearances.  Or what about a Japanese Fox Demon meddling in people's buisness affairs. The possibilities and folklore to be introduced here are endless.
